Strength & Conditioning Philosophy
Our goal in the Wartburg College Strength & Conditioning Program is to help each athlete reach their highest potential during their four-year experience in athletics on our campus.  We believe in developing the complete athlete stressing the following areas:  ground-based explosive power and strength, speed, agility, functional flexibility, core strength, and overall conditioning.

Ground-Based Explosive Power & Strength
Our strength programs are based on the combination of multi-joint and sport specific exercises.  We believe that Olympic Training (Clean, Jerk, Snatch exercises) in combination with ground-based Strength Exercises (Overhead Squat, Front Squat, Back Squat) are the foundation for any good strength program.

Speed & Agility
The ability to accelerate, reach high velocities, change speed, and change direction play a major role in athletic success.  We will spend quality time teaching our athletes the proper mechanics to become efficient in movement.  The combination of ground based strength and proper movement mechanics will allow the athlete to improve in the area of speed and agility.

Functional Flexibility
Flexibility is a critical part of our exercise programs.  Functional flexibility (flexibility specific to sport movements) plays a key role in injury prevention, speed, agility, and overall movement mechanics.

Core Strength
We believe that successful athletes have the ability to handle their own body weight and possess great core (abdominal, lower back, glute, and hamstring) strength.  We will incorporate many body weight exercises (i.e. push-ups, pull-ups, pistol squats) into our programs, and spend quality time developing the overall core strength of the athlete.

Overall Conditioning
A well conditioned athlete has the ability to handle stressful situations during a time when their body is fatigued.  We will stress the importance of attention to detail during our conditioning segments.  Our goal is to allow the athlete to concentrate on fundamentals, technique, and assignment during competition rather than thinking about their level of fatigue.

What Can You Expect From Our Coaching Staff?
Our strength & conditioning staff prides itself on our ability to COACH our athletes in each of the areas mentioned above.  We preach “process over product” meaning that we will TEACH our athletes to train with proper technique (the process), which will allow for training gains and competitive success (the product) to be achieved.  We will strive to MOTIVATE our athletes to push themselves to be the best, and supply them with the KNOWLEDGE to reach their highest athletic potential during their four-year experience as a Warburg Knight.
